Success Through Practice - The Whoosh Method

Simply put, Whoosh Learning is designed to help students master the many challenges contained in math, reading, and spelling. Whoosh targets basic knowledge skills, math problems, spelling and reading through an interactive online learning program.

Is Whoosh Learning a video game?
No, Whoosh is not a video game. Kids have video games already. Whoosh is not a "learning game" that entertains your child while injecting minimal learning concepts. Whoosh Learning is an online, interactive, study practice program that allows your student to learn at their own pace while being challenged to improve their mastery of basic knowledge, reading, math, and spelling skills. And while we strive to make Whoosh as enjoyable as possible, our focus is on improving student academic progress. It would best be compared to online tutoring based on a curriculum developed over several years by Dr. Molly Keogh, Ph.D. and specialist in Teaching and Curriculum.

What does "Success Through Practice" mean?
Academic success, much like athletic success, comes primarily from practice. While natural ability plays a part in achievement, everyone can improve and succeed through proper instruction and practice. We don't expect atheletes to come to the field on game day and win without having first put in the effort needed on the practice field. Likewise, academic success depends on the effort put in to learning and mastering the skills. This practice benefits everyone, from the naturally gifted to those who must work harder to master these skills. Whoosh Learning is designed to provide that practice field to allow your child to improve in school and reach their academic potential.

How does the Whoosh Method work?
The Whoosh Method is based on the principle that students learn best when they are able to see, hear, and touch what they are learning. Our key focus is on not only learning the material, but mastering and retaining that information, which is when true learning takes place. Working towards that goal, we focus on "fluency", which in Whoosh we define as "speed" + "accuracy". The multiplication table is a great example of this method. It is learned, practiced, tested, timed, and ultimately retained for life. Once a skill is truly mastered, it can be quickly recalled and can be the base for greater learning.

Visual Learning
Pictures, visual hints and graphs are used as math tutors to help children who learn by seeing. A timer and questions completed tracker are used in all phases of learning to help the student know how much time they have and how many questions they have left to answer. Visual hints are given if answers are entered incorrectly. A graph is used at the end of a phase to show student how quickly and accurately they answered questions.

Auditory Learning
All lessons include sound cues to let students know how quickly and accurately they are answering questions. A whoosh sound means the student has answered the question quickly and accurately. A ping sound means the student has answered the question accurately. A round of applause is heard when a student successfully completes a lesson.

Interactive Learning (Kinesthetic and Tactile Learning)
Students must type in all words and numbers. This helps students "feel" the answers as well as increase their keyboard familiarity.
